*********************************************************************Hong Kong auction boomReported at http://www.scmp.comSpink has announced its auction of Fine Stamps and Covers of China and Hong Kong to be held mid-January. The star lot of the sale is the unique example of this famous $2 error stamp used on cover. This legendary cover with the highly desirable item of Chinese philately is estimated at HK$5,000,000 - HK$6,000.000. The Chinese stamp is one of only 50 issued with an image of the Peking Hall of Classics mistakenly inverted and the only one known on cover. The story of the $2 stamp went back to when the Republic of China was founded in 1912.The government needed to issue a new set of stamps and asked one of the best printers of engraved stamps at that time, Waterlow and Sons in Britain, to produce the new set.But the first world war broke out soon afterwards and so an identical set of engravings were made in Beijing in 1914. The printers made a mistake and printed the stamp upside down.In 1995 the cover was sold for HK$500,000.Spink’s spokesman said the growing affluence of mainlanders had increased the value of Chinese stamps in recent years."People in mainland China have suddenly got a lot more money and stamp collecting has become a popular hobby," he said, adding that mainlanders who bought stamps were usually collectors, not speculators. The auction also includes the collection of Chinese stamps formed by Colonel Valentine Burkhardt, a well-known citizen of Hong Kong from the 1950’s. His favourite stamps were the Large Dragon issues of Shanghai. Originally issued in 1865, these are the first postage stamps issued in China. His album is of museum and includes proofs and sheets.Other material includes Highly valued surcharge stamps, rare Republic of China Stamps, Provincial Issues, Liberated Areas stamps, Balloon mail, Hong Kong Stamps and Korean Postal History. |
